Welcome back to the classroom!
In language arts this week, we will be learning about poetry.
Spelling words will focus on r-controlled vowels.
In math, both grades will be balancing their first bank statements from Middle School Bank. 2nd grade will also continue working on telling time, and 3rd grade will finish our investigation into the concept of area, as well as learning about circumference and diameter.
Social studies will focus on Veterans’ Day and early communities.
In science this week, we will conclude our investigation into soil and wrap up what we have learned about Earth’s most basic natural resources.

Week of 4/6-4/9

As we begin our fourth week of long-distance learning, I wanted to again express my appreciation for how Middle School parents and students have stepped up and worked hard to continue the learning process. It has been quite a learning curve for all of us, but I am very pleased with a lot of what I’ve been seeing.
There will be no assignments for Friday, as it is Good Friday.
In Language Arts, we will learn about homographs and practice writing different types of letters.
2nd Grade Spelling words will focus on words ending in -ly. Spelling words are badly, madly, quickly, weekly, daily, sadly, gladly, bravely, softly, and loudly.
3rd Grade Spelling will focus on the suffixes -ly and -ally. Spelling words are lonely, suddenly, rapidly, tenderly, lovely, nicely, dangerously, actually, personally, especially, formally, informally, locally, and alphabetically.
2nd Grade Math will continue to explore arrays and use them for multiplication.
3rd Grade Math will learn more about polygons and angles. We will also continue to practice multiplication facts.
In Science, we will learn about how rocks and soil are a valuable natural resource.
In Social Studies, we will learn about international and domestic trade. We will also write letters to local businesses to help us connect what we’ve learned about the economy to our local community.

Week of 3/2-3/6

Thank you all very much for helping make our Invention Convention last week such a huge success!
Please remember that we have noon dismissal on Friday. It is also the last week before Spring Break.
In Language Arts, we will be learning about pronouns.  2nd Grade Spelling words this week will focus on the wh- beginning pattern. Spelling words will be when, where, what, why, which, while, white, whale, whirl, and whistle. 3rd Grade will focus on the -sion and -tion endings. They will have the words permission, confession, decision, confusion, vision, attention, question, nation, action, and combination, as well as the sight words when, where, what, why, and which.
2nd Grade Math will be learning about 3D shapes. 3rd Grade will continue working on multiplication facts while also discussing decimals.
In Science, we will learn about how air is used.
In Social Studies, we will look at money choices, including budgeting, income, and expenses.

The Invention Convention is this Friday! Please remember that all paperwork is due by the 26 th, and inventions and display materials should be completed no later than the 27 th.
In Language Arts, we will be learning about irregular verbs.
Spelling words this week will be irregular verbs. Our spelling words are did, drew, grew, knew, slept, kept, ate, said, drank, and brought. 3rd Grade will also have the words thought, went, read, spent, and told.
  2nd Grade Math will be learning about quadrangles. 3rd Grade will continue working on multiplication facts while also discussing place value to the millions.
 
In Science, we will begin learning about natural resources.
 
In Social Studies, we will begin studying economics with an overview of the roles of consumers, producers, businesses, and money.

Week of 2/10 – 2/14

Invention plans are due on Wednesday of this week, and our Valentine’s Day party will be at 2:45 on Friday.
Valentine’s Day is on Friday, so this week we will be doing an integrated unit in which each student plans a store to sell Valentine cookies, then analyzes sales results to determine how to change their business plan for the following year. NO ACTUAL COOKIES will be produced during the process– it will all be on paper this year.
In Language Arts, the cookie store project will involve both process and descriptive writing.
In Math, this project will require both grades to work with fractions, addition, converting minutes to hours, telling time, adding money, multiplication (or repeated addition), arrays, and graphing. While the processes are the same in both grades, the difficulty will be appropriately varied.
2nd Grade Spelling words this week will focus on sight words and the -ink ending. Spelling words are: drink, think, sink, stink, wink, very, know, say, before, and because. Bonus word: Valentine. 3rd Grade will be spelling words with a VCCV pattern and a few sight words. Their spelling words are: winter, army, cellar, garden, lasso, market, basket, welcome, until, always, please, country, between, holiday, and important.
In Social Studies, we will learn about the history of Valentine’s Day, including legends about St. Valentine and how Conversation Hearts candies have changed over the last several decades.
In Science, we will learn about what causes the different seasons of the year.

Week of 2/3 – 2/7

Welcome to February! Thursday will be our hundredth day of school for this year, and we will dismiss at noon on Friday.
In Language Arts, we will continue our exploration of different types of folk tales and learn about compound words.
2nd Grade Spelling words this week will focus on the -ph ending pattern. Our spelling words are graph, laugh, paragraph, tough, rough, enough, triumph, cough, dough, and though. 3rd Grade will be spelling compound words. They will have the spelling words notebook, sunset, sunrise, bookcase, classroom, everyone, football, sunshine, rainbow, baseball, hallway, outdoors, cowboy, pancake, and fairytale.
2nd Grade Math will continue working on paper-and-pencil addition strategies. 3rd Grade will work on basic multiplication facts.
 
In Science, we will be learning about how the Moon moves.
 
In Social Studies, we will learn about celebrations in different communities.

Week of 1/27 -1/31

Welcome to the last week of January! This is the last week to get Invention Convention ideas turned in, as next week we start the research and development phase.

In Language Arts, we will begin exploring different types of folk tales, including myths, fables, and legends.
2nd Grade Spelling words this week will focus on the -ck ending pattern. Our spelling words are stack, pack, dock, lock, quack, rack, snack, quick, neck, and check. 3rd Grade will be spelling comparatives (-er and -est). They will have the spelling words bigger, better, smarter, louder, hotter, higher, lighter, darker, strangest, highest, tallest, richest, happiest, brightest, and oldest.
2nd Grade Math will be learning paper-and-pencil addition strategies. 3rd Grade will learn about the relationship between multiplication and division.
 
In Science, we will be learning about how the Earth moves and how this movement relates to days and years.
 
In Social Studies, we will learn about how legends, myths, and fables can be used to share culture.

Welcome to another week! We have a lot of fun things going on this week.
 
In Language Arts, we will be learning about homophones, and beginning work on the January/February edition of our newsletter.
2nd Grade Spelling words this week will focus on the -sh ending pattern. Our spelling words are dash, wash, clash, mash, wish, fish, dish, hush, push, and rush. 3rd Grade will be spelling homophones. They will have the spelling words here, hear, bare, bear, way, weigh, its, it’s, flour, flower, board, bored, hair, and hare.
2nd Grade Math will be working on double-digit addition. 3rd Grade will learn about diameter and circumference.
 
In Science, we will be learning about what the moon is like, and what it would be like to be on the moon.
 
In Social Studies, we will learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. in preparation for the holiday next week.
